At Walnut Valley Puppies, we take the health of our dogs seriously. Our goal is not to just breed cute puppies and sell them as quickly as possible. Rather, we aim to provide you with a wonderful companion that brings you joy for the many years ahead.
Because of this, our rigorous breeding practices, and a passion for caring for our customers, we confidently offer up to a 5-Year Genetic Health Guarantee on all of our puppies.
On this page, you’ll find the details surrounding our Genetic Health Guarantee, as well as how you can extend that guarantee from the standard 3 years to 5. If you have any questions or concerns after reading, please give us a call at 618-421-8981.
We are here to support you at every step of your adoption journey and can’t wait for you to bring home a happy, healthy, and loving puppy.
Puppies are live animals—not robots or pieces of furniture! As such, we cannot control the exact outcome of their health. That being said, there is a lot we can do to give them the best shot at a long, healthy life.
We want you to know that our care for you and your puppy does not end after bringing your new puppy home. In the case of any issue arising, we are here to support and see you through it.
In the case of a genetic issue arising in the first 3 years (5 years with the right nurition. See more details below.) of your puppy’s life, we will either replace the puppy with one of equal value, or reimburse the cost of medical expenses up to the total cost of the puppy (not including sales tax or travel expenses). We ask that two vets confirm the health condition prior to reimbursement.
To-date we have had very few cases like this, but we do want you to have the assurance that should something happen, we are here to support you and help where we can.
At Walnut Valley Puppies, we feel very confident in the health of our puppies and are comfortable offering a three-year genetic health guarantee on all our puppies regardless of the food they are on, or knowing how they are cared for.
Your dog’s nutrition and lifestyle are very important, and if you feed your puppy pawTree food, we will extend the Genetic Health Guarantee to five years—covering your new puppy with the same reimbursement promise for as long as pawTree food is fed in the five-year period.
If you have any questions or concerns after reading, please give us a call at 618-421-8981.
We are here to support you at every step of your adoption journey and can’t wait to help you bring home a happy, healthy, and loving puppy.
check out pawTreeIn the 1800s, Bernese Mountain Dogs were limited to a small population in Switzerland. In an effort to prevent the beloved dog from going into extinction, inbreeding practices were used to preserve its wonderful traits.
While we are certainly grateful the Bernese Mountain Dog has survived to the present day, the limited gene pool has resulted in recurring genetic health conditions within the breed. These include hip and elbow dysplasia (developmental joint disorders where the hip or elbow doesn’t form properly, leading to arthritis and pain), various cancers, and a shortened lifespan.
While cross breeding the Bernese Mountain Dog with a standard or miniature poodle does help to remedy some of these conditions—and in most cases more than doubles the dog’s lifespan—we take even further measures to ensure the health of our puppies through genetic health-testing our parent dogs, following a strict health care program, and giving our pups proper nutrition and exercise from day one.
Over the years, Walnut Valley Puppies has had very few dogs end up with serious health concerns. The reason for this is simple. All of our parent dogs are DNA tested, have their hips and elbows tested with OFA and/or PennHip testing, as well as checks for auxiliary (but less common) ailments.
If a dog shows any traits of a painful or terminal genetic illness, we will not breed them. We only breed those parents we believe will produce healthy puppies. It’s something we take very seriously.
As the primary veterinarian for Walnut Valley Puppies, I have had the pleasure of working closely with them over the years and can confidently speak to the health and well-being of their dogs and puppies.
Walnut Valley Puppies demonstrates responsibility and dedication to the health and well-being of their dogs. All breeding dogs are health tested to ensure they are suitable for producing healthy puppies. Walnut Valley Puppies follows a thorough vaccination and deworming protocol that aligns with current veterinary best practices, setting their puppies up for a strong, healthy start. I see all of their adult dogs annually for comprehensive health exams, and each litter of puppies is thoroughly examined by me before they go to their new homes. These puppies consistently present as healthy and well-socialized, and it is clear they are raised in a loving, attentive environment with proper early handling and care.
Walnut Valley Puppies is deeply committed to the care and welfare of their puppies. Their proactive approach ensures that only puppies in good health and condition are placed in new homes.
I fully support and endorse Walnut Valley Puppies as a breeder and confidently recommend one of their puppies to prospective families.
Walnut Valley Puppies are guaranteed to go home healthy from tip of nose to tail.
To achieve this, we follow a strict vaccination/deworming protocol and have our puppies vet checked before sending them to their new homes. To date, we have had zero issues with Parvo or distemper in any of the puppies we’ve sold.
However, it is common for puppies to pick up parasites such as Giardia, coccidia, or roundworm, as mother dogs are more vulnerable to parasites after giving birth. They may then pass these parasites along to some of their litter in the early days of their puppies’ lives.
Because of this, we ask that you get your puppy checked by a vet within 72 hours of adoption. Any normal vet costs incurred are the responsibility of the owner, but if your vet discovers a pre-existing condition, you may provide a copy of the veterinarian’s invoice to have treatment costs reimbursed up to the total cost of the puppy.
Additionally, if your puppy is found to have parasites or other issues within 72 hours of adoption, we will reimburse you 100% of the necessary medications.
