Bernedoodle Puppy Temperament: Choosing the Right Puppy for Your Family

Here at Walnut Valley Puppies, our goal is to breed puppies with great temperaments. Every puppy is unique and each one boasts a personality that is different from the others.
Leading up to the selection process date, we carefully evaluate each puppy and put them into one of these three categories below.
Please note that a puppy’s personality can change over time—and much of their adult behavior comes from how you train them. The following observations may not hold out as your puppy matures.
1. Laid-Back, Calm, Gentle, Chill
Ideal for families with a less active lifestyle or smaller living space, type 1 puppies tend to be more relaxed, and lower energy. As youngsters, these puppies may appear timid, but they usually become more confident as they mature.
These puppies will run and play, but they will not be the first to investigate new areas or be the first to run after us if we walk away from them. They are quicker to take a nap than their higher-energy siblings.
A Bernedoodle is still a Bernedoodle and even if we put one in this category does not mean that this puppy will never show energy. It simply means this puppy will likely be more chill overall.
2. Middle-of-the-Road, Playful, Goofy, Fun-Loving
Puppies with a 2 rating are our middle-of-the-road type. They are neither the most outgoing of the litter or noticeably laid-back. Most of our puppies fall into this category. Their sweet, goofy, loving, and playful personalities are a good fit for almost anyone.
3. Energetic, Playful, Outgoing
These are our most playful and outgoing puppies. They are the first to investigate when we let them out in the yard, are the first ones running after us when we walk away, and love action and play! This type of puppy is a good fit for active families.
It is not uncommon for our type 3 puppies to be the first to pull on our shoestrings or pant legs. They also love to instigate wrestling matches with their siblings. As such, they’ll need plenty of exercise to keep them out of trouble.
We have puppies in this category that are adopted into apartments or smaller living spaces. Although not as ideal, with proper training and exercise this can be totally fine.
Please note: Many character traits can be found in every category. Just because a 3 puppy is goofy, that does not mean a 1 puppy will not be. The above ratings mostly relate to energy levels and the kinds of behaviors we often associate with each puppy as they grow.
